Letter from a NICU baby on Father’s Day

NICU baby, father's day, dad, baby hand, father son

Dear Daddy,

Happy Father’s Day!!!

You probably didn’t picture our first Father’s Day together quite like this…

I wish we could be snuggling on the sofa watching a baseball game together, or maybe going on our first hike in that cool carrier you bought for me, but we’ll have to wait just a little longer for our adventures!

In the meantime, I want to tell you how much I already love you.

Dad, your visits are one of the best parts of my day.

I don’t always understand your words, but I adore the comforting sound of your voice. And no matter what you’re saying, I know every word means, “I love you.”

Sometimes you might feel sad that you can’t spend more time with me, but please don’t! I know how hard you’re working to take care of our family, and we’re going to have LOTS of time together once I get home.

Even though I’m still here in the NICU, I love having fun with you! When you read my favorite books, help my nurses with my bath, or settle in the comfy chair for some skin-to-skin time I feel so safe and loved.

I can’t wait to do all the things you’ve told me about! We’re going to watch your favorite sports, rock out to your favorite songs, go on some amazing adventures and you’re going to teach me so many things.

I’m so excited to hear stories about when you were a little kid just like me.

I can’t wait for you to teach me all the amazing things you know like how to throw a ball, paint a painting, ride a bike and be a good friend.

I’ve been thinking up some big plans for us when I get home, Daddy.

I hope you’re looking forward to playing pretend, building forts, and maybe even some dress-up tea parties, because I sure am!

I’m already learning so much from you. You’re teaching me what it means to be strong. To work hard and take care of the people you love. To be a person you can count on.

You are the best daddy in the whole world, and I am so, SO glad you’re mine.

Happy Father’s Day!!

Love,

Your Little One
