The NICU is your baby’s first nursery, and you want it to be special!
You’ll be spending a lot of time together in that space, and adding some personal touches can make it feel cozier, more inviting, and a lot less scary.
NICU parents don’t have a lot of time to search for design ideas for their little one’s space, so we’ve put together a list of 10 cute, simple ideas to make your baby’s space feel like home. Every hospital has its own rules and regulations about décor, so make sure you run ideas by your nurses before implementing them.
With so many great ideas to choose from, you’ll have your baby’s NICU space spruced up in no time!
- Family Photos
This is an obvious choice- of course you want to surround your little sweetie with all the people that love them so much, but space is limited. Consider creating a “family tree” or “family album” poster with all your loved ones in one spot.
- Meaningful Quotes
This is a challenging time, and it’s nice to have words of wisdom to remind you that this too shall pass. You can easily design and print your favorite words of inspiration, or if you’re crafty, break out your fancy pens and cardstock and create your own!
- Footprint Art
You might want to enlist your nurse’s help on this one because there’s a good chance they have a LOT of experience! There are countless adorable things you can do with a set of tiny footprints, so footprint art has become a NICU staple. You can also check out Pinterest for lots of clever, creative ideas for your baby’s sweet feet!
- Cards or letters
You’ve probably gotten some beautiful cards and letters from the people who love you and your child. Hang up a few of your favorites to remind you that you have lots of support at this difficult time.
- Sibling Art
Big brothers and sisters might not have gotten the chance to meet the new addition in person, but they are no doubt VERY excited about their new sibling. Ask your big kids to draw some sweet pictures for their brother or sister and display them proudly!
- Name Banners
The options for adorable name banners are endless! You can order one that fits the design of your baby’s room at home so you can reuse it after you leave the NICU. Or, if you love a project, hit up the craft store for fabric and supplies to make a one-of-a-kind banner for your one-of-a-kind kiddo.
- Milestone Cards
If you’re looking for an easy and cute option, Every Tiny Thing has got you covered! We offer a line of adorable cards designed to celebrate every milestone. Check out our Milestone Cards.
- Favorite Book Illustrations
Storybooks are known for their beautiful illustrations, and they can double as incredible art. If there’s a book that you love to read to your little one, consider copying a favorite page and hanging it near the bed to get you excited about all the sweet story times ahead.
- Special Blankets or Crib Sheets
Many NICUs allow you to add a special blanket to the isolette, and you might even be able to bring a few fun crib sheets once your baby moves to an open crib. It gives a pop of color and adds some whimsy to the sterile hospital setting.
- Holiday Decorations
You might be in the NICU over a holiday but there’s no reason you shouldn’t celebrate those special days! Add some festive cheer for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Valentines Day, or even Groundhog Day if you’re so inclined!
Channeling your creativity and surrounding your family with meaningful things that bring you joy will make you feel more comfortable during your NICU stay. Your family will be heading home soon, but in the meantime, you might as well make the NICU feel as much like home as you possibly can!
